Missoula Volunteers Raise Funds for Naga School By Clem Work

In the midst of one of Myanmar’s worst crises in modern times, the best thing to do is to nourish hope for a brighter future, and what better way than to foster education? With that in mind, Missoula’s Global Faith Group, whose members had trained English teachers with Studer Trust in 2015 and 2018, launched Room2Learn on April 17. The objective of the global fundraiser was to help build a school in the Naga Self-Administered Zone (SAZ). After three weeks, the fund had collected $20,736, about half of what is needed to complete the school in the village of Khar Lel.

Most of the materials for the four-classroom brick-and-steel schoolhouse will be coming from Yangon and Mandalay by boat and truck, a 700-mile journey that will probably take at least a month from the central Myanmar city. Workers, too, will need to be transported to the remote site. Groundbreaking will not take place until funding has been secured, but Studer Trust chairlady Cho Cho Lwin said she hopes that will occur by the end of the year. Studer Trust focuses on supporting communities in some of the most underdeveloped areas in the country: Chin State and Nagaland in the northwest, Shan State to the east, and Tanintharyi Region to the south.

Education will reduce poverty and inequity, increase household incomes, improve individual and family health, strengthen the communities and expand economic development. It will also promote lasting peace by helping to build national unity in an area that has a long history of fighting and civil strife. Finally, education will really help people stand up for themselves. This is particularly true in Naga, where thousands of children lack access to a quality education because there is a severe lack of schools and the mountainous terrain makes it difficut to travel to school. According to the 2014 Census, 71% of adults 25 years and over in the region had never been to school, and only 5% of adults have completed high school.

Leaders of the fundraising drive initially set a goal of $10,000 to build one classroom, but within 72 hours had doubled the goal to $20,000 because of the strong response to the appeal on the fundraising site Chuffed. The Australian company was chosen because it has an excellent reputation, charges no platform fees and pays out directly to Studer Trust’s U.S. dollar account in Hong Kong. As of May 7, more than 125 supporters had contributed amounts ranging from $25 to $1,000. Even after the goal was achieved, the fund was kept open until May 28 in hopes of securing more funds to be used toward completion of the school.

With deep appreciation for the mission and integrity of Studer Trust and the dedication and hard work of its small staff, the Global Faith Group has raised USD 45,000 since 2012 to support Studer Trust teachers and schools through scholarships and building projects including lavatories, a dental clinic and a power sub-station.
